Guardian of the Lighthouse

A lighthouse on a rocky coast above a stormy sea at sunset

About the project

Guardian of the Lighthouse is a story-driven piano composition that I wrote in A minor. Yes, once again in a minor key, because those are the ones I enjoy the most.

This time, however, the piece is not directly based on my own feelings. It tells the story of a solitary lighthouse keeper and tries to capture what he might feel during long nights when he has little to rely on but himself.

For me, the piece is also a tribute to lighthouse keepers, especially those who did this work long before modern technology. They often spent days or even weeks away from their loved ones, sometimes completely alone. Their responsibility was to keep the lighthouse burning, a light that could be the only hope for ships searching for a safe way through the darkness and a warning of dangerous shores ahead.

Most of us probably have very little in common with the profession itself. But we may have more in common with the lighthouse keeper than we think. There are moments in life when we have to rely mostly on ourselves and keep going even when the way forward is difficult.

The idea behind the piece is therefore quite simple. If we endure and keep our light alive, then one day, just like the lighthouse keeper, we may find our way home.
